Achievements and performance 2021

The Adventure Sailing Trust, this year, has provided grants to disadvantaged groups in Glasgow and surrounding areas. This helped groups to provide a wide range of opportunities for young people to participate in recreational and sporting activities with the principle activities raising awareness of the benefits and safety of sailing and water sports. This support has encouraged young people to develop their mastery of skills; increase self-esteem, resilience and social cohesion; and provide a safe space and respite away from social and family pressures.

Due to restrictions caused by the pandemic, some groups have been restricted in their provision of outings.

Monies distributed to supported groups and organisations this year have been used to financially support children from isolated and vulnerable families to experience a range of activities.

● A grant was awarded to a Clyde based Scout group to help expand the provision of their water sport activities to help address the predicted crisis in mental health amongst young people due to the pandemic. Activities are being extended to younger members, and this donation has therefore helped to purchase life jackets, rearm kits and face masks suitable for use in a marine environment.

● An award was given to a Glasgow group who provides respite for young disadvantaged children experiencing crisis family situations and chaotic lifestyles. This group provides a safe and supported environment for the children to play, both indoors and outdoors. The children took part in educational day trips.

● A group from the Gorbals area in Glasgow have been awarded a grant for the continuation of their successful kayaking programme supported by Pinkston water sports centre.

● An award was given to a group in Govan, to enable them to take the young people on two trips as outlined in their application. Many of the teenagers come from families with limited income and so often miss out on activities other teenagers might take for granted.

● An award was given in December to two Glasgow groups that support homeless youth. Our Trustees agreed that as the pandemic had had such profound effects on our society, that these awards would provide some relief of those in need by reason of age, ill-health, disability, financial hardships or other disadvantages.
